Teenage Pregnancy in Oromia, Ethiopia

The Center for Evidence Synthesis, Support & Development in Africa (CESDA) has completed a comprehensive study of the factors driving teenage pregnancy, and strategies to prevent it, in Oromia, Ethiopia.

Funded by the Gates Foundation through the Gudina Tumsa Foundation (GTF), and conducted in partnership with the Oromia Region President’s Bureau, the Oromia Health Bureau, and other key stakeholders, the study provides critical evidence to inform policy and practical interventions to reduce teenage pregnancy across the region.

The study used multiple research methods including quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and global evidence synthesis. More than 1,150 teenagers from eight woredas participated, representing urban, rural, and pastoralist communities.

CESDA later co-hosted a stakeholder dialogue in Addis Ababa where findings were presented and discussed with policymakers, healthcare providers, community leaders, and development organizations.

With teenage pregnancy estimated at 17% in Oromia, the third-highest rate in Ethiopia, the study highlights the urgency of evidence-informed interventions. CESDA continues to support health and social policy through research and knowledge translation.
